Munich is one of the popular European destinations to visit during Christmas. The combination of the gothic churches, cathedrals, the beautiful city architecture and the famous Christmas markets provide a perfect blend for relaxing and romantic holidays during Christmas time. Being the capital of Bavaria , and with a population of about 1.55 inhabitants, Munich is a popular destination and if you plan a few days trip in this beautiful city you will not run out of options of what to visit or do.

Around the Marienplatz square and the pedestrian steers of the Old Town (Altstadt) you can find one of the original Christmas Markets - the Christkindlmarkt. The market is especially beautiful to visit during the afternoon or evening, where all the Christmas lights are nicely lit and the different stands offer their handcrafted products, Glühwein, and traditional bavarian food.

The market opens every year towards the end of November and lasts for about a month (until the 24th of December). If you are planning though to visit Munich during the Christmas days be aware that the stands at the Christmas markets are closed during Christmas, meaning both the 24th and 25th of December. Furthermore, during these days, shops and restaurants are in general closed in the city - most European countries and that includes Germany too celebrate Christmas as a family holiday - so although you can still find restaurants and shops open those will be only a few.

Planning your trip to visit the Christmas markets around the 21st to 23rd of December might be the closest dates to Christmas while all markets are still in full operation.

There are many more markets in Munich to explore, some of the large and some of the small, most of them do have a similar similar schedule, meaning that they last for a month until the 23rd of December. Some markets will continue also after Christmas and towards the first week in January. Lastly in addition to the Christmas markets, while being in Munich it would be worth visiting the Tollwood- Winter Festival. The Tollwood takes place in the Oktoberfest area and apart from the Christmas market, it offers many performances such as theater, music, activities for children and so.
