Located close to the city of Skanderborg, about 5km to the west, the area of Mossø is a protected area ensuring that the largest freshwater lake in Jutland, remains in its present state and that the public has easy access. Beautiful surroundings with historical interest, abounding in a rich variety of plants and animals, especially some of the rare bird species.
Visiting Mossø Lake and Klostermølle
If you like spending time in nature, this is certainly a very beautiful place to visit and why not plan a picnic day there.
If you visit Mossø from the west side you will find yourself in the Monastery Mill (Klostermølle), a very nicely preserved area consisting of old buildings that are all open to the public. You can read about the history of the old paper mill and see the old drying barn- the beautiful wooden construction you see in the photo, which is also Denmark's longest wooden building. We found it so nice to stare at the impressive long rails and hatches that were once used for drying the handmade cardboard and paper. It is also permitted to enter the old drying barn, where there has been built a bird observatory tower too. Needless to say, the overall surroundings are offering a great location for photography. Being an internationally bird-protected area, there is a great chance to see some of the rare hawks (western osprey) or white-tailed eagles that have established a breeding place in the area.

In on other the other buildings, there is a small exhibition where you can read more about the history of the place and the operation of the mill.

If you like hiking, from the Monastery Mill you can start the walk towards the Sugar Loaf - or as is called in Danish Sukkertoppen - which is one of the highest hills in Denmark. The view from the hills towards the Lakelands is simply stunning.
